The Northern Walkway was newly renovated during the comprehensive restoration project in 1997. This included replacing the roofs and tiers of four weakened pavilions, demolishing and reconstructing the leading pavilion at the platform, replacing the old, deteriorating roofs with new ones, and reinforcing the weak wooden pillars with concrete pillars. These efforts were carried out while preserving and enhancing the walkway with intricate Myanmar craftsmanship. During the restoration, the original wooden carvings, sculptures, and traditional Kanote designs inside the main entrance, as well as the Buddha life sculptures and paintings inside the Laquerware hall, were carefully maintained in their original places to ensure that the historical elements remained intact.
Along the Northern Walkway, you can observe various paintings depicting the history of the Shwedagon Pagoda, the scene of delivering the Mahā Samaya Sutta sermon, the heavenly palace created for Nandiyā the Wealthy in the celestial realm, scenes from the Mahosadha Jātaka, the Young Meāgha Jātaka, and sculptures and paintings from the King Kusa Jātaka.
The total cost of the restoration of the Northern Walkway amounted to 146.0 million kyats, including 79.5 million kyats for the traditional Myanmar craftsmanship. On September 20, 1998, the grand opening ceremony of the Northern Walkway’s main entrance, platform entrance, and the stone-inscription of chronicle for the walkway’s restoration project were all held on the same day.
