The Western Walkway was planted a stake to mark the site on July 10, 1932, and construction began in 1935. The Western Walkway was renovated in 1990, and on June 12, 1990, eight large escalators were installed and opened for public use. Over the years, the Western Walkway has undergone various renovations and maintenance, including significant restorations in 1995-96, 2001, and during the last major restoration in 2008. During this process, damaged areas of the roof, the skylights, and the window panels were repaired.
In addition, traditional Myanmar wooden posts, railings, and gold-coated pillars with glass decorations were restored, and the entire walkway was repainted. During the comprehensive renovation, two lion statues were added to the left and right sides of the walkway entrance, as they were not present in the original structure. These renovations were done to preserve the cultural and architectural integrity of the walkway while ensuring its long-term durability.
