The archive building is a 3-story building located at the back of Shop 40, under the east gate of Shwedagon Pagoda. Previously, It is located on the basement of the Shwedagon Pagoda’s Museum (Rahu Corner) and was opened on 14.7.1992.
At that time, the Archive was a branch of the Museum-Gallery Department. In 1994, it was designated as the archives, sub- department directly handled by the head office, and now it is handled by department of the staff affairs and records. In 2011, In order to upgrade the archive to a new Buddha museum, the archive on the basement of the museum was moved to the east of U Khin Own Pitakat Taik (also known as hpyar-pone Pitakat Taik) and opened on 21.8.2013. Donors of that archive, family of U Thet Shei and Daw Mi ,and family of U shwe One and Daw Thay Thay with their son Mg Ohn Khin of Yangon and Ma Sein Tin was donated in the year of 1299. In the archives, office orders, Instructions, weekly meeting minutes, Festival plans, reports, CD, DVD, Photo album, Video Album issued by various departments of Shwedagon Pagoda
has been stored. The archive is not for public display, but for the systematic preservation and collection of historical documents so that they can be accessed as needed.
Books and files kept in that archives, Daw Hla Kyi ( a staff officer from the National Archives Department of the current preservation (sub-group) modelled their systematically. The archival team of the Staff Officer served from 25.6.1991 to 10.7.1992.
The 5 groups are:
(1) Administrative Archives 1 to 15 (1884 to 1988)
(2) Financial Archives 1 to 3 (1945 to 1988)
(3) Business Urban Archives 1 to 7 (1923 to 1988)
(4) Communication; Information and Related Archives 1 to 7 (1959 to 1988)
(5) Archives 1 to 2 relating to other departments (1893 to 1988)
