The Chanthargyi Pavilion, known for housing the largest Buddha image on the platform of the Shwedagon Pagoda, comprises two connected pavilions: the U San Tun + Daw Hnit Pavilion and the U Bo Kin + Daw Thet Su Pavilion. These two pavilions are often referred to collectively as the “Chanthargyi Pavilion.” The Buddha image, located in the U San Tun + Daw Hnit Pavilion, was donated by U San Tun’s family in 1882 (Myanmar Era 1244), while the adjacent pavilion to the south was built by U Bo Kin’s family in 1923 (Myanmar Era 1285). Inside the pavilion, the “Chanthargyi Buddha Image” is enshrined, famous for fulfilling the wishes of devotees.
This Buddha image is the largest seated Buddha statue on the platform, standing at 30 feet tall, and is also known as the “Sun-resilient Buddha.” The pavilion was renovated in 1960 by U Kyaing, with the assistance of the contractor Sayar Khin and his sons. In 1998, the pavilion’s flooring was replaced with stone tiles, and in 1999, the surrounding protective structures were removed. Further renovations were carried out in 2000 under the supervision of a committee, replacing the decorative metalwork and reinforcing the structure. The pavilion is 88 feet long and 40 feet wide and includes a “Saṁgha platform,” making it a significant venue for major ceremonies and continuous recitations of the Pāḷi scriptures.
