The Eastern Walkway at Shwedagon Pagoda is a significant structure originally constructed during the British colonial era. Historically, this major walkway was situated amidst residential areas and had fallen into disrepair. In 1995, during a comprehensive renovation and reconstruction period, the Eastern Walkway was rebuilt. At the front of the Eastern Walkway, two lion statues were added as there were none previously. Historical markers indicate that construction took place in 1913 and 1935. In 1931, a fire that started on the western walkway spread, damaging parts of the eastern walkway, including the Dhammacetī stone inscriptions and other buildings, resulting in the loss of many ancient artifacts.
During the renovation, the old location of the Dhammacetī inscriptions was maintained at the midpoint, where the walkway descends slightly.
The Eastern Walkway is adorned with various paintings, including:
– The Grand Walkway Painting,
– A night view of Shwedagon Pagoda from Kandawgyi Lake,
– Scenes of Sumedhā the Hermit’s receiving the prediction, and offering many offertories,
– The ten great Jātaka Stories,
– Buddha’s life stories, and
– Eight auspicious signs, etc.
Throughout the walkway, there are numerous stalls selling Buddha statues, sculptures, and various religious items made from stone, ivory, wood, and bronze. Other items for sale include incense, bronze bells, and other offerings.
The total cost for reconstructing the Eastern Walkway was over 310.2 million kyats, and it was completed on June 24th, 1997. A donation-water sprinkling ceremony took place on June 28th, 1997, and the grand opening ceremony was held on June 29th, 1997.
