Coinciding with the ceremony to offer the new golden umbrella to the revered Shwedagon Pagoda, a magnificent jade Buddha statue was brought to the pagoda’s platform so that monks and the public could venerate and admire it. This jade Buddha statue was sculpted as part of the Myanmar jade industry, under the guidance of the State Peace and Development Council. The statue, which was successfully completed in 1999 after approximately nine years of work, was donated by the council to the Shwedagon Pagoda for public reverence.
