It was built and donated in 1894 (Myanmar Era 1256) by Sir Pho Thar and his wife, Lady Thar (also known as Daw Yee) and their family. The columns and window panels were decorated with gold and glass inlays. Inside the main hall, wooden carvings depict various scenes from the life of the Buddha, including Mara’s daughters attempting to distract the Buddha, the defeat of the ogre Aḷāvaka, and the Ommādantī Jātaka. These intricate carvings are part of the grand Northern Adoration Hall, where the Gotama Buddha Statue is enshrined.
In 1937, the glass-inlaid golden columns were damaged and subsequently repaired. During the comprehensive restoration project in 2005, further work was done to repair the window panels using glass inlays. In 2008, Cyclone Nargis caused significant damage to the central pavilion, with two tiers of the roof collapsing. These were restored, keeping the original craftsmanship intact.
